Leadership development
Case Study - who are the leaders?
Leadership development is a difficult term to pin down.
It covers the skills of leadership. It covers the demands of leadership, it covers the style or qualities of leadership and it also covers the types of leadership.
It is easier to consider leadership in terms of the factors of a leadership engagement task. In any given leadership context there are four factors to consider:
- Leader – who is it and how good are they at leading
- Followers – what do they want form the leader in the context
- Vision – Even in the simplest of leadership tasks knowing and communicating the direction and destination are critical. Where is the team heading, is it clear in their mind what the direction is and how they are to get there.
- Context – whilst there may be a great many similarities there is also enough evidence to show that each situation is different and warrants a new perspective.
But this is not enough as it does not get under the skin of the actual skills and so forth of what a leader is.
Case Study
We were asked to review an organisation's senior management team (SMT) to ascertain why they were not engaging fully in the high level vision and what was stopping them operating as a fluent and efficient team.
We carried out a Personality Profile on each of the team to determine what their individual personality traits were and how best to maximise them.
We then worked together on a number of workshops to identify what their view of the high level vision was and how they were going to impact on it.
What became clear soon on was that the dynamics of the team were all wrong. They were not collaborating or cooperating. They were blocking one another.
After a few sessions it became very clear that one individual was the primary factor within this dysfunctional team.
Once this was established, the individual was interviewed by the CEO and after many attempts to coach them to adapt their personalities to the benefit of the team, they decided that they were not right for this organisation and left.
The team are now highly motivated, engaged in the vision and flying along.
