Coaching Skills

Coaching in a business context is the management task of supporting others to achieve their tasks and goals. There are numerous techniques and tools available to guide a prospective coach as to the means of coaching, however the skills are or should be identical. They are as follows:

1. Active listening – the skill of being able to transmit to the coachee that the coach is really engaged with the conversation.

2. Empathy – the ability to walk in the coachees shoes, to see life from their perspective

3. Giving positive feedback – coachees are vulnerable during the coaching process so the skill of being able to proffer feedback positively is a must

Coaching techniques

Doesn’t matter which technique or tool you use, be sure to apply wisdom first. The key to being a great coach is determined by the power of the questions. As the saying goes “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.”

Great coaches ask searching, insightful, challenging questions. The coaching questions help to guide the coachee into new lines of thought, new areas of reflection and could open up whole new avenues of activity.

Ideally they should help the coachee to move closer to their goals. If the goals are unknown or unclear, the first job of the coach is to help the coachee to unwrap them to the point where they are concrete enough to move towards.
